Meet Kendra Smith – LEAD Marketing Graphic Designer
Name? School? Major/Minor?
Hi, I’m Kendra Smith. I graduated from the Grand Valley State University Frederik Meijer Honors College in April 2018. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art, with a Graphic Design emphasis.
What’s your favorite thing about being a graphic designer?
I love creative problem solving and all of the possible solutions you can create for just one project. I also enjoy learning about many different industries! Not everyone’s job involves working for a restaurant, law firm, and clothing store all in the same day. An added perk is going places and being able to analyze their font and paper choices. It’s a fun game for a designer to mock the Papyrus font on signs when you drive by.
What do you like to do outside of the office?
I love being outside, doing things like camping, boating, kayaking, hiking, and hammocking. I partner with Team World Vision and have casually run the Grand Rapids Half Marathon for the last few years (I say casually, because I am definitely not trying to break any records!). I also like to draw/paint/craft and sell my creations at art shows, take photos, swing dance, and pet every dog that walks by in a 5 mile radius.
What is something others find interesting about you?
I had a detached retina at the ripe age of 21! For those of you who have never heard of that, basically it’s a thin layer inside your eye that holds it together. It usually will detach waaayyy later in life, only for some people. I had to have emergency surgery to repair it, a surgery that I had to be awake for! I’ll spare you the rest of the gross details. I did have to retrain myself in certain things like photography, as my surgery was on my dominant eye.
What are the values that drive you?
Passion, Wisdom, Growth, Independence, Fun, and Honesty
Top three favorite podcasts/books?
My favorite book of all time is Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. I also love The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I’m a 90’s kid, so naturally the Harry Potter series is another favorite. I’m not big into podcasts, but I will listen to any design podcast featuring Lauren Hom. She’s my favorite designer/letterer and she always has a ton of wisdom (and food jokes!) to share!
